What can a potato tell us about ourselves? What does it say about the construction of national identity? What role can new narratives around it play in how a society imagines itself and other worlds? How can translocal stories and food cultures be connected as an inroad to address forgotten colonial legacies and the wider context of political, social, and emotional relationships?These are some of the questions that lead to the harvesting of stories around the potato that forms Cooking Potato Stories.
This work has its roots in the tension between personal and social identity and the historical and cultural influences on its formation. Using the role of the potato as a conductive narrative, I question the power structures behind the construction of identity, based on my own experience moving between Latin America and Europe. It is a transatlantic recipe that mixes the "here" and "there", which includes different ingredients such as heritage, history, imaginary, tradition and autobiography to reflect on how a society imagines itself and other worlds based in the stories they tell each other.We all make sense of our lives through a combination of narratives, a blurred system of ideas that inspires reactions, determines values, judgments, opinions and behaviors. Today a region does not necessarily have to be a space defined politically or geographically, but a specific space for common stories and experiences, a state of mind rather than a place on the map. Therefore, finding our place means finding our place in a story and where the plot of these photographs intersect is where my place is located. I propose an encounter of narratives around the potato that grows an alternative story that questions the ideologies, power and subjectivities behind the narratives. I develop recipes of knowledge that unfold different aspects of the potato's history to push a new social memory about it. Cooking Potato Stories drives us in the complex process of how we construct, understand and make sense of ourselves individually and as a collective.

trajectory of the potato across the world, Ana Núñez Rodríguez asked herself
this question. The potato is cultivated almost everywhere, and globally
cherished as an important part of local food cultures. Núñez Rodríguez set out
on a quest to unearth local ‘potato stories’ across the world, including her
own childhood memories and her migratory trajectory between Spain, the Netherlands and
Colombia. The resulting harvest of verbal and visual anecdotes, recipes, myths
and memories surrounding the potato forms a mosaic of how the humble crop
universally inspires cultural and individual identities. &#38;nbsp; 


 The
artist’s family history
is fundamentally intertwined with that of the potato: the crop was first
domesticated in South America and was brought to Europe by the Spanish conquistadores in the 16th
century. Through
a process of cultivation and modification, it continued to spark unprecedented
population growth in Europe and beyond, and radically transformed local cuisines.
From fries to aloo, tortilla, gnocci, or ‘stamppot’, the tuber has since been
widely adopted as a national or local food in countries across the world. 


 However intertwined our societies and economies are with the
potato, none can truly call them native. The story of the potato began long
before the concept of nation-states existed, and the trajectory of the potato
from the Andes into our kitchens was marked by many obstacles. It took
centuries for the crop to take root in the cold European soil, and was initially valued for its decorative
flower. The work of Núñez Rodríguez shows us that the story
of the potato is one of continuous metamorphosis and adjustment
to its local surroundings; a feeling that the artist (and many with her) can identify
with. 


 By collecting stories small and large, personal and
historical, factual and fictional, Ana Núñez Rodríguez investigates how “[t]he
potato packs a universe of symbolic information on identity, domination and
social differentiation.” The many stories told in this exhibition present the
humble potato as the product and cause of violence, famine and migration across
the world. Yet they
also talk about survival, sharing, belonging and family. The continuous
transformation and adaptation of the potato becomes a metaphor for human
resilience, and for how our identities are rooted in the stories we tell each
other.

		<description>ABOUT&#38;nbsp; TANGERINES AND AVOCADOS


	One of the earliest attempts to impart some form of order on the universe around us were the constellations. Those representations are probably the first maps that the humans developed, a way used to track the time and also the space. About tangerines and avocados is a photographic series that draws a constellation using the domestic sphere as space; a visualization of the tension that exists between a mixed nationality couple with colonial background. A map that allows various interpretations but at the same time helps giving a sense of orientation in this universe influenced by the barriers of different nature -physical, institutional, political, emotional, cultural and social- to which they have to face. A transformation of the domestic space into a nation, a scenario that reveals the emotional dimension of the constant need to demonstrate the veracity of their love.

"Tangerines are most probably indigenous to Southeast Asia while avocados are likely to have originated from South Central Mexico. It goes without saying that despite being so different in origin they are totally natural to be seen today in the same house in any part of the globe. And if it's about people, not fruit? Through this vivid metaphor the series “About tangerines and avocados” by Ana Núñez Rodríguez draws on the complexities of the coexistence of European and Latin American reality within one particular family. It is contemplative, delicate, at times tense and unsettling, but still - natural. One sees this duality coming to peace in the universal reality, created by the photographer, where one's hand no matter the origin is always a perfect puzzle piece for another human's hand."

BETWEEN WATERS


	The summer of 2017 in Galicia was atypical: warm and dry, the driest in recent history. And that lack of water extended into autumn, which put the region under threat of drought. The restlessness of my neighbors was palpable and not only because of the direct consequences on the countryside. The dryness of the environment entailed another type of affective and emotional implications that demonstrated the indispensability of its presence. Under these extreme weather conditions the search for more water, due to the drought of existing wells, became an essential task to recover stability, which allowed me to meet with dowsing.

Manolo arrived with his stick of willow tree in his hands and was able to detect the existence of groundwater currents from changes in electromagnetism perceived through the movement of its rod. He told me: "everything that exists in the universe is energy and everything that surrounds us has its energy field. All of us have the innate ability to feel it and if you work on it you will be able to enhance this capacity and reach other levels of perception, as what allows me to perceive the energy between the waters".


This practice is known as rabdomancy,  it has thousands of years of history and it is present in all cultures. Despite this, it is still considered a pseudoscience since it is a theory that goes against the scientific method.
Science is one of the many forms of thought developed by the human being, but not necessarily the best, therefore "Between the waters" poses a mysterious journey that questions the scientific methodologies and the rigidity in the development of the knowledge, demonstrating that science is much more similar to the myth than any scientific philosophy is willing to recognize.It is a serie of images that question the viewer on the domination of the sense of sight, a proposal based on a series of conceptual games with respect to the visible-not visible that bring us closer to other ways of understanding perception.

Project developed in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Coruña, as part of the Art Residency Grant.

Its mountains, dwellings of the gods according to the beliefs of the Muzo indigenous, shelter the emerald inside and they act as a vehicle towards a unique experience. According to popular legends that instant of encounter with the stone is surrounded by an enigma.

It is the moment in which the green spell takes effect, a spiritual bond with nature arises, an energetic flow between stone and the human being. Time expands and its brightness floods the fortunate leading him on a transpersonal journey. But, according to the legend, this trip is not available to everyone, that is the power of the emerald: it only lets itself be found by certain people, it chooses who gets caught. Those ephemeral and suggestive moments associated with the emerald lived by the people involved in artisanal mining are the starting point of this project.

The project is an approach to open-air mining and artisan methods of extraction nowadays in danger of extinction and a claim to the sacred character linked to this practice. The project exalts the hidden condition of the landscape and the sacralization of the emerald mining practice and recovers the popular beliefs around the emerald that go beyond the economic value and that highlight the hidden power of the stone.

The memory of bamboo

Inakidana, architectures specially designed to store bamboo that are used for drying the harvesting, stand out in the Japanese rural space because of their relevance in agriculture. These faceless witnesses collect the memories of the countryside, giving account of agricultural practices that have been transformed over the time, leaving in their path songs, stories, objects and traditions. Structures forced to culminate their life cycle, due to the use of new methods of drying, that today are diluted slowly by the erosion. An erosion that goes further and that metaphorically refers to the state of a population. Take no kioku arises from these structures and their wear to reflect about the changes experienced by a rural population marked by the tradition of rice cultivation and the landscape that surrounds them.

The project reveals how with the passing time of generations the population is absent and different traditions vanished as these structures that peek into the corners of Yoshitomi homes do. Traditions that have been hidden by the uncontrolled growth of the grass, silences provoked by the lack of transit in the water of the rice fields… absences along the rice valley.

THE ROOT OF GREEN GORSE


This project has its origin in the plant Ulex Europaeus, known in my native Galicia (Spain) as tojo, a species deeply rooted in the cultural and landscape identity of the region. In the 1950s, this plant was introduced in Colombia under the name retamo espinoso, for purposes of reforestation and erosion control. However, in the Colombian ecosystem, its uncontrolled spread has led to it being considered today an invasive species, classified as one of the greatest threats to local biodiversity.


This phenomenon highlights the impact of plant migrations induced by human intervention, as well as the complex relationships between species across different geographic and cultural contexts. The classification of retamo as a threat has triggered eradication strategies which, while aiming to mitigate its negative effects, also raise questions about policies of controlling nature and the underlying narratives of domination embedded within them.


From this critical perspective, the project interrogates the dynamics of power involved in categorizing a species as “invasive,” proposing a viewpoint that regards plants not merely as passive objects within the landscape, but as political actors with their own agency in processes of colonization, ecology, and territorial transformation. Taking the tojo–retamo case across two distinct geographies as a starting point, this project seeks to build a translocal bridge that enables dialogue about the interaction between humans and their natural environment.

Artistic research residency at Creative Court.
A project around a gift that travelled to The Hague in remembrance of missing people in Colombia. 
In collaboration with International Commission of Missing People (ICMP)

According to estimations by authorities, in Colombia, following the more than 50 years of conflict that ended in 2016, 120,000 persons are missing. In endeavors aiming to locate the many missing persons, their families are key, as are civil society organizations. Their persistent efforts force States to acknowledge and act on their responsibility to account for all missing persons.

The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) supports the participation of families of missing persons in efforts to account for missing persons and secure their own rights to truth, justice and reparations. The ICMP partnered up with Creative Court, an Hague-based organization at the interface of the arts and global justice. As a starting point for the artistic process, Creative Court gave me access to a special gift, donated to the ICMP by representatives of different Colombian civil society groups during their visit to the Hague.  The gift, consisting of objects and artefacts related to the missing in different communities is the starting point of “a lens, a forest, a fiber”: a project that was envisioned as an act of honoring the missing and their loved ones considering the photographic process as a ritual.

The project has diverse visual components  - the objects integrated in The Hague forest, anthotypes ( images created using photosensitive material from plants) of embroidery flowers sewn by the families using plants from the forest, microscope images of the objects and still life of leaves of same forest- that represent the different aspects of this ceremony that all together configured this act of memory. “a lens, a forest, a fiber” goes from the very inner feelings of a concrete person to universal feelings and it visualizes the different optics and ways to look into a conflict and how it affects on different scales.


“In many ways, we think of memories as immaterial.
A fleeting thought or a feeling. Something internal and without form. Yet
perhaps this does not tell the full story. Objects can be vessels for memory,
containing moments and traces of someone who is no longer there. The word
heritage comes to mind. Objects inherited from the past. We inherit more than
just the object, we inherit the memory. In this way, objects can keep the
memory alive. They give it form and they give it presence. And at the same time
the memory adds a layer of meaning to the objects.
This is the case for many relatives of missing
people who keep personal objects and artifacts as a way of preserving the
memory of their loved ones. The objects resist absence, some do shouting and
some with a whisper, yet they all speak their presence. Is there a way of
exploring the materiality of memory? Can we visualize the memory that seeps its
way into the grains, fibres and molecules of these objects? What role can art
play to help speak their presence and to keep the memories of those missing
